Avocado

The avocado, so reminiscent of the pear in its shape, is also known as ‘butter fruit’ on account of its high fat content. Its shiny skin can be green, yellow or purple and often has a pebbled texture. The green-and-yellow flesh lies beneath the skin and surrounds the great stone at the centre. The riper the fruit, the tastier it is and its ripeness can be tested by lightly pressing the skin. Avocado is superb in both savoury and sweet salads and desserts and also makes an excellent addition to sandwiches, whilst the pulped flesh is also used for making dips.
